JANUARY NEWS
Dear First Grade Families,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Welcome back!
We will start the year by learning about Arctic and Antarctic animals, birds, and winter weather. Skills we will be focusing on include map reading, reading a themometer and hypothesizing. Our seventh grade , prayer partners will be helping us with a special map making project.
In language arts , the children will review nouns and verbs and be introduced to adjectives. We will continue to identify different types of punctuation and sentences. Our new phonics concepts include the vowel, consonant, vowel rule; open, accented vowel rule; digraph ea; the dropping rule;and dipthongs oi and oy.
We have started to count money using pennies and dimes. Please send in a few empty, food boxes or cans, as we will set up a "store" and practice paying for these items.
The children will be asked to add two-digit numbers , using dimes and pennies, (with and without regrouping).
Encourage counting coins at home as well.
In addition, we will practice dividing squares in half; counting by fives; subtracting by two;and drawing line segments using rulers.
Our religion lessons will be on Old Testament Bible stories, such as Noah, Moses and Jonah.
Spirit week is the last week of January and several, exciting speakers will be visiting OLGS.
Items we could use this month include: empty food containers, animal crackers, coffee filters, gold fish crackers, bird seed, pinecones, shortening or soy butter.
I would like a few parents to volunteer to help us make pinecone, bird feeders this month.
A new homework journal will be coming home each night. Please be sure to check and initial this daily.
Lastly, our class would like to send a special welcome to our new classmate, Andrew. Be sure to meet Andrew and his family .
Thanks for all your support at home,
Ms.Sheria Traylor
